Hi, I'm Andrew Bosserman. I'm based in Charlotte, North Carolina. I'm a tax controversy attorney, CPA, and founder of Boss Tax Law. My firm is dedicated to helping business owners navigate IRS disputes.
My Story
I started my career as an IRS agent, where I earned my CPA license and got to see the agency from the inside. After a few years, I tried working as a financial analyst, but it didn't feel like the right fit. I needed a change.
I spent six months traveling through Southeast Asia. I learned Muay Thai boxing, freediving, and figured out what I actually wanted to do. When I came back, I started a small Christmas tree farm in Ohio. That hands-on experience as a business owner, combined with my IRS background, sparked an idea. What if I could help other business owners navigate the tax code and defend themselves against the IRS?
That led me to law school at Wake Forest University. I earned my J.D., then joined an AmLaw 200 law firm. But I knew I wanted to build something on my own. In 2021, I founded Boss Tax Law. Today I focus exclusively on tax controversy and IRS defense for business owners across all 50 states.
Work
My practice focuses on helping business owners navigate tax disputes with the IRS. I represent clients in audits, appeals, litigation, penalty abatements, and back tax negotiations.
I'm admitted to the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina. These are the three courts that hear federal tax cases.
What sets me apart is that I can do two things at once. I understand the numbers as a CPA and I can argue the law as an attorney. I know what it's like to be on both sides of the table.
The IRS Survival Guide
I recently published The IRS Survival Guide, a free resource for business owners facing IRS scrutiny. The guide covers what to do in the first 48 hours after receiving an audit notice, how to prepare bulletproof records, how to decode IRS notices, and how to negotiate settlements and payment plans. It's available free on my firm's website and on Amazon.
Christmas Tree & Forest Landowners
Before founding Boss Tax Law, I spent years building expertise in a very specific niche: helping Christmas tree growers and forest landowners minimize taxes and maximize profits. I owned and operated a Christmas tree farm in Ohio.
I've helped many growers implement the Capital Gain Method under IRC § 631, optimize their bookkeeping systems, navigate hobby loss rules, and structure their operations for long-term success. I've presented at major industry conferences across the country and published dozens of articles on Christmas tree and timber taxation.
Personal Life
I live in Charlotte with my family. Outside of work, I'm a bit of an adventurer and hobbyist.
My wife and I perfected our homemade wood-fired pizza technique during the pandemic. I ran my first marathon in 2023. I've also climbed mountains, summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro with my brother. I play the saxophone, mostly to serenade my family with Christmas music once a year. I hike the North Carolina mountains with my family and friends. And I volunteer with my local church.
I also have a dog named Theo, after my favorite U.S. President, Theodore Roosevelt.
